It has also replaced alcohol entirely as a social intoxicant. I didn’t really drink all that much anyway, but I don’t plan to drink anymore at all, and I credit cannabis for this. I rarely smoke it, my primary ingestion method is infusing the flower into fat (coconut oil) and then eating it. My only problem is that whenever I eat some (estimated dose is between 15 and 60mg), I get EXTREMELY lethargic the next day. I sleep late, and I’m not nearly as productive as I want to be. I’ve read that this might be due to the strains I’ve been using, primarily indicas. Being a rookie, I just went with the highest THC content so I could get the best value for my money. Sitting back and getting couch-locked and watching some of my favorite movies can be great, but I’m looking for different cannabis experiences. My question is: Will trying a sativa strain really make that much of a difference for me? I’d love more energy and creativity whilst intoxicated, but I would really like to avoid the sluggish feelings the next day or two. I want to be able to continue using cannabis, but I want to get up the next morning and have very few effects left over. I’ve looked at a few different strains that local medical dispensaries have available (AJ Sour Diesel, Jack Herer, Strawberry Cough) and I’m wondering if these or other sativas would be better matches for me. Is there REALLY much of a difference between strains? Open to anyone’s experiences. Personally I don't think a simple split of sativa = head high, energetic etc and indica = stoned couch lock is a realistic view. While the distinction can be useful to show lineage and growth patterns etc it is not a valid way of splitting effects. Plenty of sativa's show "indica" effects and vice versa.

In reality the compositions of terpenes In any given strain And their interplay with cannibanoids is what gives a particular effect, not the geographical location of parent strains (which is in essence the difference between sativa and indica). Think of it this way: pure thc gives a very uplifting, energetic high, but many indicas have higher level of thc than sativa's, yet produce a stoned effect.

Why is this? Because of the composition of terpenes within the plant. Pure sativa with high levels myrcene will couch lock you as much as the strongest of indicas. Oh, and then there’s the fact that effects are highly individualistic- blind testing has shown that when people do not know the type of weed they report a whole range of different effects, whereas when they do know, the reported effects are more similar indicating a degree of suggestibility amongst users. No, the indica/sativa thing is a huge misunderstanding and we should be over it by now.ĭividing strains into indica/sativa is kind of like cross-breeding different dog breeds for decades and then claiming that one of them is a retriever while the other is husky.

Obviously they're all bound to have inherited traits from several breeds at that point and none of them is exactly like their distant great-great-great grandparent. I work with cannabis and when people as for "indica dominant strains" my first question is usually: what traits are you looking for? Are you referring to the phenotype, how the plant grows a little smaller and bushier? Or are you looking for a certain flavor/chemotype/flowering time/yield/bud shape/what else? These are all herited separately from either one or both parents (depending on the specific gene, but I won't go into that now) and basically the only strains that have pure "indica/sativa" sets of traits would be certain landraces, I believe. If you know a strain you like and are not growing yourself*, look up its cannabinoid and terpene profiles. For example, I personally prefer strains with high THC, low CBD, some CBG and mostly limonene and alpha-pinene.
